Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval…beware of getting swept too far away.
It was just a game. But a kind of game that would turn Scarlet’s life upside down.
Scarlet received a surprising invitation from Legend the master of Caraval. It was a letter that she have been waiting for many years. She wrote letters to Legend pleading for him and his troop to visit their small Island to perform for years but never received any retort. She got tired of waiting and eventually moved on with her life. They say that if you get the chance to play and win Caraval’s game, Legend will grant whatever wish you desire. As of the folktale she heard, Legend doesn’t grow old, he can make every woman fall for him but this powerful magician swore never to fall in love again.
Scarlet’s character was not really a main character type, she always say no and has a lot of fears. It was contradicting as she wanted to play the game but was also unadventurous. The revelation part towards the end was perplexing as well as her acceptance about it was also disappointing. Challenges on the book was muddled but despite of those, it was entertaining and animated. The author gave me a picture similar to harry potter as the layers of Caraval was similarly amusing.
A kind of book you would like to read during summer break or a book in hand while sitting in a café. If the romance within you is sleeping well this novel will make you fall in love again. I’m serious! I fell in love with Julian, a heartthrob! **giggles**
Warning: The ending will make you want to ask for more but the second book will be released next year.
If in any case that you don’t believe me that this book is a good one well Fox bought the movie rights. 😀
Julian: The Sailor boy and a lover boy ♥ Ugh! Yes please! Be mine!
Scarlet: Somehow I hated her character because she has a lot of fears
Tella: You Prick! But I can’t wait to read yours soon
Legend: No comment. I want to say something but I might spoil some info. Read the book!
